The Hidden Treasures of the Bacchae, Double Edge Theatre, 2022

The Radical and The Revolutionary

Following the Outdoor Traveling Spectacle, on August 7 Stacy Klein and Baraka Sele will initiate The Radical and The Revolutionary, a dialogue on their experiences in theatre and life. This conversation will be followed by a meal in honor of DE’s 40th Anniversary celebration.

Double Edge Founder and Artistic Director Stacy Klein shared thoughts on The Hidden Territories of the Bacchae and on DE’s 40th Anniversary:

Amidst the deeply painful issues of our time, we at Double Edge believe that our mission and values of Art plus Living Culture plus Art Justice are ever more vital to creating the future in which we want to live. We offer a sanctuary in which to build together the daily courage of the imagination. Double Edge began in 1982 with our first performance RITES, a modernization of the Euripides’ play by Maureen Duffy set in a women’s bathroom. We did not expect to see that forty years later there would be even more of a call for matriarchal values and rites/rights. Yet our vision of these Hidden Territories of the Bacchae looks toward the future, to a time when we will together be guided by the spirit and heart of liberation and light.

The Hidden Territories of the Bacchae is conceived, designed and directed by Stacy Klein, co-created (text adaptation, acting and choreography) with Ensemble members Travis Coe, Milena Dabova, Jennifer Johnson, and Carlos Uriona, with music composed by Amanda Miller and aerials by Cariel Klein. Rounding out the Ensemble/Company team are Adam Bright (rigging, producing), Jeremy Louise Eaton (design), Michael Fitzgerald (technical director), Hannah Jarrell (objects), Tadea Klein (costumes), John Peitso (music, lighting), Silas Riemer (stone/tree design), and Tomantha Sylvester (music, acting).

We are excited to share that joining us are our long-term collaborators Jeff Bird (designer), Mary Louise Geiger (lighting design), Morgan Jenness (dramaturgy), Walton Wilson (acting), and guest artist/performers Graceson Abreu Nunez, Micaela Farias Gomez, Nicole Garneau, Lydia Lai, and Vanessa Ogbuehi.

About Double Edge Theatre

DE was founded in 1982 in Boston, MA by Stacy Klein, a radical visionary who came to the realization that she could not find a place among institutionalized formalities or rigid identities to create her art. This new Ensemble was established to challenge the boundaries of perception and open new worlds at the crossroads of creativity, imagination, environment, and performance. In 1994, Double Edge moved from Boston to a 105-acre former dairy farm in rural Ashfield, MA to create a sustainable artistic home. Today, the Farm is an international center of Living Culture and Art Justice, a base for the Ensemble’s extensive international touring and community spectacles, with year-round theatre training, performance exchange, conversations and convenings, and greening and sustainable farming initiatives.
