ten years since Margaret Cameron’s death. An online gathering in honour of this remarkable artist.

Please do not cut off my hands
For they are connected to my heart
Do not cut off my hands
That I may write
And let the word poet

Be engraved upon a stone
That will be my headstone

Margaret Cameron’s memorial

Margaret Cameron's MemorialMargaret Cameron  ~ poet, performer, director, dramaturg and pedagogue ~ influenced a generation of artists through her ideas, performances, collaborations and teaching. One of Australia’s most creative and original voices, her performances have been described by the critic Alison Croggon as “redolent with wit, sorrow and sensual passion” and imbued with a “linguistic and intellectual richness that is rare on our stages”.

Over 30 years Margaret created work that was informed by individual need, rigorous dialogue and enduring collaborative exchange with arts practice and her audiences. In her words, “Art is a Verb”. Anne Thompson has said “Talking to Margaret about her art…involves talking to her performances. She answers my questions with quotes from her work. She performs her work in answer to my questions…Her work is her conversation. It speaks for itself.”

On Saturday, 5th October at 9pm, friends, family and colleagues gathered online to celebrate the life, the work, and the spirit of this remarkable artist. The event marked the 10 year anniversary of Margaret’s death. The event honoured her legacy and the love we have for her.
Twenty-one friends and family made short offerings to celebrate her work and her life.
