Living Archive and Transmission in a Theatre Laboratory
Project partner Odin Teatret hosts the third of four meetings of the international network comprising of theatre organizations The Centre for Performance Research (Wales, UK),The Grotowski Institute (Wroclaw, Poland), Odin Teatret (Holstebro, Denmark) and The Hemespheric Institute (New York, USA). The network was established with a grant awarded by the Leverhulme Trust to Principal Investigator Richard Gough to consider the history and function of laboratory theatre and assess its relevance to contemporary practice. The four initial meetings will be followed by a larger open gathering in the UK in April 2014.
The second meeting, held at The Grotowski Institute in Wroclaw, Poland in October 2012 further explored the genealogy and legacy of the laboratory tradition with presentations by Prof. Katarzyna Osińska (Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Science, Warsaw) on the ideas and practices of Leopold Sulerzycki and Wanda Świątkowska (Jagiellonian University, Kraków) on the theatrical experimentation of Les Kurbas. A panel discussion with contemporary Polish directors and practitioners - Tomasz Rodowicz (Theatre Association Chorea), Piotr Borowski (Studium/Tatralne), Paweł Passini (neTTheatre) and Matej Matejka (Studio Matejka) – chaired by Professor Darius Kosinski (Jagiellonian University, Kraków) began a new phase of discussion about the present position of the laboratory tradition. The artists on the panel, who are connected to the tradition either through their own contemporary work or via a historical link to a laboratory practitioner, were asked to describe: What is and what is not laboratory theatre? What are the boundaries between what is and what is not defined as laboratory work? Is there another term for work that is not focussed on the end product but on the craft of creation?
The programme at Odin Teatret entitled, ‘Living Archive and Transmission in a Theatre Laboratory’ will address the question:
What experience of a theatre laboratory can be passed on and in which form: the strategy of an archive
