ARIADNE: A Social Art Network

documentation of performance work on violence against women from 1977-1982

ARIADNE: A Social Art Network is the conceptual framework for all the performance work on violence against women produced by Suzanne Lacy and Leslie Labowitz Starus between 1977 and 1982.

Leslie Labowitz Starus writes:

“I have been working on this site for over a year when you count the hours scanning separate from the website design. I am motivated to preserve the history of the early performance work on violence against women while responding to the current social transition on the subject headlined by #MeToo and the other activist movements.

My intention with this site is for it to be used as an educational tool that teachers can integrate into their curriculum and researchers can dig deeper into resource material. The fact that it is free and can be viewed anywhere in the world was a provocative concept, hence the choice of a website. It is an evolving site that will add on more resource material as it surfaces. It has been designed to be easily read on Smartphones, tablets and computers. Since today’s generation use their Smartphones for everything, it was critical for it to be viewed on all devices.

In 2006, Suzanne and I created The Performing Archive as an installation that was made up of our ARIADNE archives. It traveled to various venues in the US and Europe. The website is an offshoot of that concept that expands our audience considerably.”
